Athos, Monastery of Gregory
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, built on the steep cliffs of the coast, in one of the most beautiful locations on the peninsula. For years poor, the little monastery was driven by money sent by the Danubian rulers. Hagarenes pirates, poverty, and fires (the largest in 1761 that completely destroyed it) could not bend the faith of the monks of Ioakim Makrigenis, who managed to rebuild it after 22 years.
Coenobitic monastery, holds several treasures, and an important library. Its catholic is painted by folk painters of Kastoria. Most important, after the fragment of the True Cross, is the portable icon of Panagia Galaktotrofousa, depicting the Virgin to breastfeed the little Christ.
