Plastiras Lake

Plastiras Lake is located on the plateau of Nevropolis in the Prefecture of Karditsa. It is an artificial lake and its official name is Tavropos. It was constructed in 1959 with the completion of the dam. The idea of the construction belongs to general and politician, Nikolaos Plastiras. In 1935 he visited his home town which had been destroyed floods in the region and looking at the area, he said one day there will be lake here.

A French company took over the construction of the lake and the works were funded by the Italians as they owed some money to Greece (war reparations). Today the dam is managed by the Hellenic Public Power Corporation (ΔΕΗ). It is noteworthy that before the construction of the lake, the Airport of Neraida was located on the plateau. It was created by the English during their occupation and the first ally aircraft landed there in August 1943.

The lake contains 400.000.000 cubic meters of water. It is 12km long, 4 km wide at certain areas and around 60 m deep at places. The water is used for irrigation and electricity generation. The lake has recently become a popular tourist attraction and you can do several activities on or around the lake.
