Carnival customs, Skyros

With the beginning of the Carnival period and every weekend of the days of the Carnival, the custom of the island wants the "old man" and the "korela" to come out on the streets and give a distinct picture of the days.

The "old man" wears a thick black cape, a white woven breeches and has around the waist 2 to 3 rows of bells, the weight of which can reach 50 kilos. His face is covered with a small goat's skin and walking with a dancing pace, he manages to make a melody with the bells he wears.

The "korela", the old man's partner, is dressed in traditional Skyrian clothes, dominated by white in complete contrast to the black color of the old man, with her face covered.

The twin of this Skyrian carnival often accompanies the "frank". This masked man, dressed in traditional clothes on the island, satirizes those Skyrians who replaced the breeches with trousers (Frankish).

Another event of the Skyrian carnival is the "trata", a representation of naval life, where fishermen mostly rhythmically satirize situations and events that concern Greek everyday life.

On Clean Monday, almost all Skyrians with traditional local uniforms come to the village square and dance and sing Skyrian songs.
